A moment of surprise is simply a neurological error signal that tells you that your understanding of the world is wrong and that it needs immediate adjustment. Surprises hijack our attention and drive a search for the reason of the surprise. This intense emotional arousal and soaring receptivity to information creates a brief window for a healing message. Using anecdotes, along with current neurological and cognitive research, I identify and map the consequences of using humor to trigger surprise as a strategic tool for healing.
