What would be the impact if we reframed mental illness as a combination of mental illness and mental able-ness?  What if in addition to counseling and medication to treat a disability, we showed people ways to embrace, utilize, and celebrate their extraordinary ability?  I believe the positive impact would be incalculable.  People would learn that they are not broken, they were made this way.  So, for me it comes down to the question; if this, then that, what is the connection?  If this, my mental illness, give me that, my mental able-ness, what is the connection?  I believe the connection is the why, and I believe the why is found in evolution.
